Thank you for the birthday wishes!

Thank you all so much for all your posts and e-cards. You really made my birthday special! (((Hugs)))

I gave myself a present. I wouldn't move from my computer until I finished writing the rest of STEP MONSTER. Whew! That was the longest and most difficult revision I have ever done! The last time I switched a manuscript from a chapter book to an MG was CAMP CAPTIVE, and once the beginning hook clicked, the words just flew. I think it took about a week to write the first draft of the MG version.

Part of the reason STEP MONSTER took so long was because I had to stop for several conferences and vacations, and to polish three other novels. I was getting back into the groove when I had to stop and revise one of the other novels again. I also had run the beginning of STEP MONSTER through several of my groups, and received such wonderful feedback, saying it was my best work yet. Wow! But then I looked at the huge hole between the old and new versions. I kept writing and writing, and the versions felt like they were growing further apart instead of together. I don't think I had any usable chunks until somewhere around page 90--and even then, I had to be careful that anything I kept was in the MC's new and improved voice. But...I DID IT! I still have some polishing to do, but I love, love, love the novel. The first 64 pages are polished and ready to go, and I'm busy revising the rest and sending it through my groups. I was going to push myself to get this out by December, but with most of my time going to NaNoWriMo in a couple weeks, I'm probably going to start submitting it in early 2008.

By the way, this is what my daughters made for my birthday. Not only was it incredibly sweet of them, and extremely creative...it sparked a great picture book idea!

Happy belated birthday, Mindy! And what a sweet looking birthday cookie your girls made for you.

Thanks, Lorraine. :) Actually, it's not a cookie. That's what everyone thinks it is...it's really a piece of bread.

I'm really bad about checking my friends' birthdays, so I'm glad you mentioned it -- HAPPY BIRTHDAY (a little late) :D Love the cookie, btw!

Thanks, Robin. :) I have the birthday alert on, but it tells you a few days in advance. Some days, the announcements get so buried in my e-mails, I forget until way after the birthday.

Would you believe it's a piece of bread? I'm not sure how my girls came up with this idea, but it's really creative. They even put yellow icing on the candle, since they couldn't light it.

That's neat -- they inherited their mom's creativity :)

Thanks! :) I always feel great when I feel a manuscript is finally ready to submit, but I have a feeling I'm going to celebrate even more than usual when STEP MONSTER is ready.

Very artistic. :>)

Thanks, Christine. You wouldn't believe half the things my girls come up with. I should chase them around all day, taking notes, and I'll have enough book ideas to last a lifetime.

And another belated birthday wish from me! Wishing you a lovely new year filled with success!

That's a piece of bread??! How sweet your two daughters are. I think they must have a lot of Mindy DNA in them. {}

How do you get birthday announcements via e-mail? I only see them if I check my LJ page. I don't even know what that page is called. I have it bookmarked specifically to see when annoucements such as birthdays are posted.

I'm glad I checked on 10/18. {}

Here's to finishing old stories and coming up with new ones. Long may you be inspired-- and long may YOU inspire. {}

Thanks, Pamela. :)

To get birthday announcements via e-mail, go to your Home page, then click more next to the birthday list. Click on birthday reminders, and then check the box for them, close to the bottom. I only discovered it recently, but I rarely go to my Home page, so it's perfect for me.

How is everything going with your MG?

Oh, I finally get to see the finished product. They did a great job. I have to admit, it looks a lot better than it sounded when you described it!!! :)

Thanks, Julie. And yes, it's hard to picture a piece of bread looking like a cake. I can't remember how they first started to do this, but Rebecca is constantly surprising me with 3D cards and all kinds of creative art projects.

Aw..what a creative birthday treat from your girls. Bread is much better than a cookie!

Congratulations on finishing the revisions for STEP MONSTER!!!

Thanks, Sharon! I'm 3/4 of the way through the next round of revisions, trying to make sure all my November subs are ready to go, so I won't have to take time away from NaNoWriMo. I'm really loving this version! So many pieces have fallen together (some on purpose, some just seemed to happen that way). I'm finding foreshadows I didn't intend, but am thrilled they are there. It's amazing how much different this manuscript is than it was a year ago!

Awwww....tasty and sweet!

Thanks, Crissa.

So, have you seen TOTAL CONSTANT ORDER in the stores yet? I'm so sorry I won't be able to go to your signing. I hope the store sells every single one of your copies!

You're welcome! I'm sorry I won't be able to go to your signing. I would have loved to hear you read and meet you. Are you going to attend the Miami Conference?
